Basilan Encounter of Government Forces Against Abbu Sayyaf Leaked on Social Media!

One of the largest single-day combat losses by government forces this year occurred last April 9, Saturday in the island of Basilan. 100 Abu Sayyaf forces were encountered by government troops and engaged in combat.

A 10-minute video of the whole warfare that lasted for about 10 hours was uploaded on social media and immediately went viral over the internet.

The video shows the conflict between the government forces engaging the opposing rebels. It is believed that 18 soldiers were killed in the clash and 5 from the Abu Sayyaf forces, one which included Mohammad Khattab, a Morocan instructor for explosive devices and is apparently a "Islamic jihadist preacher."

Reports have also surfaced that 4 soldiers were beheaded, but the reports were quickly denied, stating that the heavy artillery of the opposing forces caused the casualty.

Netizens were quick to react to the viral video, stating that the government should be the one to blame for the deaths of the soldiers for supplying inferior and less-powerful artilleries and ammunitions to the Armed Forces of the Philippines.

Other reports have suggested that the bloody encounter was a plan executed by the Islamic militant group ISIS.

Rohan Gunaratna, head of Singapore's International Center for Political Violence and Terrorism Research, the confrontation was the first major attack by the extremist group. It is believed to have been led by Isnilon Hapilon.
